In March 2007 DSM announced an official partnership between itself and the United Nation's World Food Programme (WFP). The WFP is the largest provider of food aid to the world's hungry. They feed and nourish an average of 100 million people in over 80 countries each year. DSM will provide the WFP with expertise, high nutrient products as well as financial assistance.

DSM is well positioned to contribute to the elimination of malnutrition. The Nutrition Improvement Program provides technical and scientific support for supplementation programs and for the fortification of staple foods with essential vitamins and minerals in developing countries. A new example in this context is the Nutritional Rice: an exact replica of a rice kernel with a high concentration of vitamins and minerals, which through mixing with normal rice makes it highly nutritious food. DSM owns rights regarding a patented process to produce this novel fortificant.

DSM provides the World Food Programme with ready-to-use vitamin and mineral mixes in sachets that are distributed to the people in need. The sachets can be sprinkled over a meal or a drink and provide people with their daily needs of essential vitamins and minerals they would not get with their poor daily diet.

A one million Swiss Francs donation
In March 2007 DSM Nutritional Products announced a donation of 1 Mio Swiss Francs to the World Food Programme if they surpassed their financial targets by more than 5%. Thanks to hard work, DSM Nutritional Products has done so well that they will be making the donation as promised. Part of the gift will be used immediately to feed the victims of cyclone Sidr that hit Bangladesh last year. Starting in March 2008 the WFP will provide the cyclone victims with 20 million food sachets fortified with micronutrients supplied by DSM Nutritional Products.
